And oll the Command Line Options don't work either. There is no setting fast, medium, slow and so on. But I noticed two drawbacks:įirst, the video optimization settings don't work. With the patch and Videotoolbox it goes down to 1 hour. With my standard settings one BlueRay movie in HEVC takes around 22 (faster setting) or 40 (slow setting) hours. But after trying out the patch from #1522 I have the feeling the speed improvement is mainly due to disabling of any video optimizations. If your solution to feature requests is to ban people, I’ll happily stop using your product, and recommending that other professionals I know do the same.Ĭould somebody explain me how macOS Videotoolbox encoding actually works? After reading at Apple Developer page I had the meaning it works by using the GPU for acceleration. I understand it won’t be as full-featured as the Windows equivalent, but just having the option would be good, so users can pick what works best for - You all could work on this as well: “Gracefully accepting constructive criticism” Speed and energy efficiency does matter to your users who use Macs, and I hope you find a way to implement Quick Sync, like other software has. So while competing software that supports QSV is much faster at encoding, they don’t have all of the other features that I need as a professional. The reason I say I prefer HandBrake is because of all of the other powerful features, like automatic letterbox cropping of the video, ability to encode with AC3 and a variety of audio formats and channels, the ability to burn-in subtitles, etc. If I cared about the absolute best quality, like when exporting a master file for screening/archive, I use a much better format like ProRes. H.264 files are most commonly used for Internet delivery, like streaming on YouTube or Vimeo, who then re-compress your already compressed video anyways when you upload it. When you go to the movies, they aren’t playing an H.264 file. H.264 is rarely a final delivery format where quality matters, so it’s not an issue for most. It's not trivial, and many people use it, including professionals like - I haven’t found any H.264 exports (hardware or software) on Mac to be “substandard”, and I haven’t noticed any differences between HandBrake’s software encoding vs. If you truly thought it was "trivial", you wouldn't have added support for it at all. Clearly you do, since you already support it on Windows and Linux. You're free to dislike Quick Sync and not understand the merits of it, but many other people do. If it's good enough for Premiere (an extremely widely used product by professionals), why isn't it for you? I don't understand what's preventing you from doing exactly what they have. Most video professionals use Macs, so to exclude Macs from Quick Sync support doesn't make sense to me.įinal Cut, Compressor, Premiere, Media Encoder, and MacX Video Converter have all managed to implement QSV on the Mac with acceptable quality and performance. I'm not a developer, I'm a professional video editor who has used HandBrake for years, and would love a Quick Sync option for many different reasons. There are other options out there for users, but unfortunately, most aren't as good in other areas. I want working prototype so I have a clean set of numbers to base a decision - If you decide not to listen to what users want, that's certainly your prerogative. I didn't say that code would get committed. Most of HandBrakes features are simply not implemented in hardware.įourth, I said I was going to hook up via the ffmpeg interface (also uses VT). If the patch is accepted, it's not going to be a full code path which would allow for the ultra low power encoding. Third, HandBrake Core (including sync), Video Decode, Filters, Audio, Subtitles will all still run on the CPU. What I said was Superfast is close enough and if folks are happy with VT compromises, then using a faster x264 preset is a good measure until we decide either way whether to incorporate this. The number of people asking for a feature is only one aspect of that decision and doesn't overrule other concerns. It's our choice whether we decide if a feature is a good fit for HandBrake or not. Read more carefully.įirst, it does matter. Please don't put words in my mouth that I didn't say.
